The following information includes commonly asked questions we’ve received regarding New Breath Foundation’s grants.
How can I apply for a grant?
New Breath Foundation (NBF) grants are invitation-only. If you’d like to indicate your interest in a grant, you may create a profile on JustFund.us and submit a proposal to NBF and thousands of other funders. NBF does not have the capacity to respond to every submission via JustFund, but those invited to apply for a grant will be contacted directly.
What does New Breath Foundation fund?
We have two grant programs, each with three priorities.
The We Got Us Fund prioritizes AANHPI movement organizations whose work supports:
- Power Building: Increase capacity to build power for AANHPI racial justice movements.
- Culturally Relevant Healing and Support: Increase opportunities for healing and support for AANHPI communities and cross-racial solidarity and healing between AANHPI and other communities of color.
- Directly Impacted Leadership: Increase development of leadership pathways for survivors of violence and those formerly incarcerated or impacted by detention and deportation.
The New Breath Fund prioritizes AANHPI movement organizations whose work supports:
- Movement Building: Advance systemic change through movement-building activities.
- Hope & Healing: Increase opportunities for healing and support for AANHPI communities directly impacted by criminalization, violence, and incarceration.
- Keeping Families Together: Promote family unification and reunification in response to the growing threats of deportation and family separation impacting AANHPI communities.
Do you fund projects, coalitions, or specific campaigns?
All our grants are general operating support grants for organizations. We do not currently do project-specific or time-limited grants. If an organization is a part of a coalition, it may use its grant or part of that grant to support that work.
Does NBF provide grants to individuals or for-profit companies?
Generally, NBF does not provide grants to individuals or for-profit entities. All grantees must be either non-profit 501(c)(3) organizations in good standing or be fiscally sponsored by one.
Does NBF fund non-U.S. organizations?
No, the Foundation currently only makes grants to organizations based in the US and its territories.
What is the typical duration of grants?
Our grants have no specific spend-down or reporting period.
When will my grant award be disbursed?
Disbursements are typically made in full in the same calendar year that the grant is awarded, towards the end of the year. If you have a request for a different disbursement schedule, contact NBF’s program staff to discuss.
Are grants renewable or multi-year?
No. Currently, NBF grants are non-renewable, one-time-only grants. Sometimes, former grantees may become eligible for additional grants, only as funds become available.
