Areas of Knowledge, Experience, Insight: Advocacy for criminalized survivors and those affected by deportation
Aylaliyah (Liyah) Birru is an Ethiopian immigrant, survivor of domestic violence, and a formerly incarcerated person. She has been an active advocate for criminalized survivors by participating in advocacy campaigns to end ICE transfers and the criminalization of gender violence. She currently serves as the administrative coordinator for Survived and Punished National while engaging in voluntary work for its California affiliate. She received her bachelor’s degree in sociology from CSU Sacramento and is currently preparing for a JD program in hopes that one day, she will be able to represent immigrants who have marginalized representation in a court of law.
